Advance Production-Ready Composite Component Manufacturing

Three-year collaboration delivers exceptional laminate quality through a repeatable, production-ready resin infusion process.

Composite Integration has successfully completed a three-year process development programme with Artemis Technologies to optimise the manufacture of a critical composite component used on the company’s next-generation electric hydrofoil vessels.

The collaboration focused on developing a repeatable resin infusion process capable of achieving the exceptional laminate quality required, while significantly reducing manufacturing time, improving manufacturing efficiency and establishing a robust route towards production.

Lightweight composite components are fundamental to the performance, efficiency and sustainability of Artemis Technologies’ electric hydrofoiling vessels. However, manufacturing thick carbon fibre epoxy laminates to the quality demanded by such a safety-critical component presents significant technical challenges.

Working closely with the Artemis Technologies engineering team, Composite Integration combined extensive resin infusion expertise with a customised CIJECT® 2 resin infusion system to optimise every stage of the manufacturing process. Over approximately three years, the partnership refined critical infusion parameters, validated manufacturing methods and established a repeatable process capable of delivering laminate quality comparable to prepreg manufacture.

The optimised process significantly reduced manufacturing time compared with the previous prepreg approach, while achieving the high laminate quality required for this demanding component. By combining greater manufacturing efficiency with exceptional quality and process control, the new approach created a practical route towards repeatable production.

The project has also delivered improved process consistency, greater control over critical manufacturing parameters and increased confidence in producing this demanding component repeatedly as production requirements grow.

The customised CIJECT® 2 resin infusion system, configured with integrated resin tanks, provides stable resin delivery, accurate process control and reduced operator variability, supporting the repeatability required for future production.

"Working with Composite Integration enabled us to optimise a challenging resin infusion process for a critical structural composite component. The combination of process expertise and the customised CIJECT® system has helped us establish a repeatable manufacturing process that supports both quality and future production."

"The first successful part is only the beginning. Real manufacturing confidence comes from proving that process repeatedly and developing a system that can reliably support production. Our partnership with Artemis Technologies demonstrates how collaborative process development can transform a technically demanding application into a repeatable, production-ready manufacturing process."

As manufacturers across the marine sector continue to increase their use of advanced composite structures, the ability to combine exceptional laminate quality with controlled, repeatable and efficient manufacturing is becoming increasingly important.

The collaboration between Composite Integration and Artemis Technologies highlights how engineering expertise, process optimisation and manufacturing technology can work together to accelerate the transition from research and development into reliable production. The work also supports Artemis Technologies’ transition towards higher-volume production of zero-emission vessels.
